Samen bouwen aan zorgzame leefomgevingen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nederland bevindt zich niet in een tijdelijke vergrijzingsgolf, maar in een blijvende demografische kanteling. In 2040 telt ons land bijna 5 miljoen 65-plussers. Het aantal mensen met dementie zal naar verwachting verdubbelen. Tegelijkertijd groeit het aandeel alleenwonenden sterk: in 2045 bestaat ruim 40 procent van de huishoudens uit \u00e9\u00e9n persoon. Tot 2030 zijn er ruim 288.000 extra geschikte woningen nodig voor senioren.<\/p>\n

Maar deze cijfers gaan over meer dan alleen de toenemende zorgvraag. Ze markeren een fundamentele verandering in hoe wij samenleven. Kwetsbaarheid wordt geen uitzondering meer, maar een normaal onderdeel van het dagelijks leven. Ouderen blijven langer zelfstandig wonen, ook wanneer hun mogelijkheden geleidelijk afnemen. Informele zorg wordt steeds belangrijker, maar is niet onbeperkt beschikbaar.<\/p>\n

Daar komt nog iets bij, minder zichtbaar maar even ingrijpend: groeiende eenzaamheid. Niet alleen onder ouderen, maar ook onder jongeren neemt sociaal isolement toe. Dit is niet alleen een kwestie van welzijn. Internationale gezondheidsstudies tonen aan dat slechts ongeveer 10 procent van onze gezondheid direct wordt bepaald door medische zorg. Tussen de 55 en 80 procent hangt samen met leefstijl, sociale relaties en de kwaliteit van de leefomgeving. Wanneer sociale verbondenheid afneemt, raakt dat dus ook de fysieke gezondheid en de druk op het zorgsysteem.<\/p>\n

De vraag die voorligt is fundamenteel: hoe organiseren wij woonomgevingen waarin mensen elkaar kunnen ontmoeten, betekenisvolle relaties kunnen aangaan en zich onderdeel voelen van een gemeenschap? Zorg is niet langer een aparte fase van het leven, maar een ge\u00efntegreerd onderdeel van hoe we wonen. De zorgtransitie is daarmee geen louter medisch vraagstuk. Het is een ontwerpopgave.<\/p>\n

Gezondheid ontstaat in het dagelijks leven<\/h3>\n

Lang was de ruimtelijke organisatie van zorg gebaseerd op \u00e9\u00e9n idee: ziekte wordt behandeld in gespecialiseerde instellingen. Architectuur diende als infrastructuur voor medische interventie, gericht op controle en effici\u00ebntie. De hedendaagse inzichten in volksgezondheid wijzen in een andere richting. Gezondheid ontstaat niet primair in de kliniek, maar in het dagelijks leven, in de mate waarin mensen zich veilig, verbonden en autonoom voelen. De gebouwde omgeving speelt daarin een actieve rol. Wonen, ontmoeten en deelnemen aan de gemeenschap zijn geen randvoorwaarden van zorg, maar haar fundament. Dat verandert ook de economische logica. Investeren in leefomgeving en gemeenschapsvorming aan de voorkant vermindert de behoefte aan intensieve zorg aan de achterkant. Een sterke sociale structuur ontlast de formele zorg en versterkt informele netwerken. Architectuur en stedenbouw worden zo een strategische factor in de zorgtransitie.<\/p>\n

Samenredzaamheid als fundament<\/h3>\n

Geclusterde woonvormen bieden een antwoord op de groeiende behoefte aan passende ouderenhuisvesting. Zij combineren zelfstandige woningen met een gemeenschappelijke structuur en gedeelde voorzieningen. De kern van deze woonvorm ligt in wat we samenredzaamheid noemen. Waar zelfredzaamheid uitgaat van de individu op eigen kracht, erkent samenredzaamheid dat mensen onderdeel zijn van sociale netwerken. Onderlinge betrokkenheid en informele steun maken het mogelijk om langer zelfstandig te wonen. Samenredzaamheid is geen sociaal programma dat losstaat van architectuur. Ze ontstaat wanneer nabijheid, zichtbaarheid en toegankelijkheid zorgvuldig worden georganiseerd. De overgang tussen priv\u00e9 en collectief is helder maar niet abrupt. Bewoners ontmoeten elkaar in het dagelijkse ritme, bij het tuinieren, het koffiedrinken, het thuiskomen.<\/p>\n

In het project Ubuntuplein wordt zichtbaar hoe deze principes ruimtelijk worden vertaald. Ouderen wonen hier in een omgeving die ontmoeting stimuleert zonder zelfstandigheid te verliezen. De woningen zijn volledig rolstoel toegankelijk ontworpen, met brede gangen en ruime badkamers. Gemeenschappelijke tuinen, ontmoetingsruimtes en gedeelde voorzieningen nodigen uit tot informeel contact. Bewoners zorgen samen voor de tuin, koken soms samen en houden een oogje in het zeil bij elkaar. Zo ontstaat een veilige, inclusieve leefomgeving waarin mensen zich thuis voelen, niet ondanks hun kwetsbaarheid, maar m\u00e9t elkaar.<\/p>\n

Zorggebouwen als onderdeel van de wijk<\/h3>\n

Een zorgzame leefomgeving kan niet functioneren als een afgesloten enclave. Wanneer zorggebouwen zich isoleren van hun omgeving, versterken zij het gevoel van afzondering. Toekomstbestendige zorg is verweven met het dagelijks leven van de wijk.<\/p>\n

In Hofje Wendakker is die visie vertaald in een open hofstructuur met twaalf woonkamers rond een groene binnentuin. Het traditionele verzorgingshuis voor mensen met dementie werd vervangen door een open, informeel hof dat letterlijk in verbinding staat met de buurt. In plaats van lange, gesloten gangen ontstond een leesbare omgeving waarin bewoners zich vrij kunnen bewegen en de buitenruimte een vanzelfsprekend onderdeel van het dagelijks ritme vormt. De tuin en dierenweide zijn vrij toegankelijk voor buurtbewoners. Bewoners bepalen zelf wanneer ze naar buiten gaan, wat heeft geleid tot meer beweging en een beter dag- en nachtritme. Het resultaat is een zorgomgeving die niet alleen medische zorg biedt, maar ook kwaliteit van leven, ritme en zinvolle sociale interactie.<\/p>\n

Vernieuwing van bestaande zorggebouwen<\/h3>\n

Een groot aantal zorgcomplexen uit de jaren tachtig en negentig zijn inmiddels verouderd. Ze weerspiegelen een zorgmodel dat primair gericht was op beheersbaarheid: grootschalige gangenstructuren, gesloten uitstraling, weinig verbinding met buiten. Toch bieden juist deze gebouwen kansen voor transformatie. Door schaal te verkleinen, functies te mengen en buitenruimte centraal te stellen, kan een traditioneel verzorgingshuis veranderen in een zorggemeenschap die voldoet aan hedendaagse eisen van comfort, duurzaamheid en persoonlijke zorg.<\/p>\n

In Foreschate in Voorschoten is gekozen voor de transitie van een intramuraal verzorgingshuis naar een moderne zorggemeenschap. De nieuwbouw combineert groepswoningen met een wijkcentrum dat toegankelijk is voor iedereen. Publieke functies op de begane grond versterken de verbinding met de wijk, terwijl de woonlagen kleinschalig en overzichtelijk zijn georganiseerd. De tuin fungeert als sociaal hart, een toegankelijke, groene ontmoetingsplek die bewoners en buurt met elkaar verbindt.<\/p>\n

Eenzaamheid doorbreken met ruimtelijke logica<\/h3>\n

Eenzaamheid is een van de grootste stille gezondheidsproblemen van onze tijd. Sociaal isolement vergroot de kans op depressie, cognitieve achteruitgang en lichamelijke klachten. Architectuur kan eenzaamheid niet oplossen, maar zij kan wel de voorwaarden scheppen voor ontmoeting. Dat vraagt om een ruimtelijke structuur waarin dagelijkse beweging leidt tot vanzelfsprekende contacten, zonder dat die contacten worden afgedwongen.<\/p>\n

In het Hof van Zutphen is het wonen georganiseerd rond een gemeenschappelijke tuin die het ensemble structureert. Galerijen functioneren als verblijfsplekken en het Hofhuis biedt ruimte voor activiteiten die bewoners en buurtbewoners met elkaar verbinden. De essentie ligt niet in het programma, maar in de ruimtelijke logica die ontmoeting mogelijk maakt. Gemeenschapsvorming wordt zo onderdeel van het dagelijks leven, niet als verplichting, maar als vanzelfsprekendheid.<\/p>\n

De waarde van de buitenruimte<\/h3>\n

Een zorgzame leefomgeving eindigt niet bij de voordeur. De directe omgeving bepaalt hoe mensen zich bewegen en deelnemen aan het leven in de wijk. Wandelen, tuinieren en het beleven van de seizoenen stimuleren de zintuigen en verminderen stress. Toegankelijke looproutes, herkenbare ori\u00ebntatiepunten en nabijheid van voorzieningen ondersteunen zelfstandigheid. Voor mensen met een toenemende zorgvraag, en zeker bij dementie, is een leesbare omgeving essentieel voor veiligheid en ori\u00ebntatie.<\/p>\n

In onze ontwerpen is de buitenruimte daarom altijd integraal onderdeel van het concept, niet als restgebied, maar als sociaal hart. Een goede buitenruimte nodigt uit, ondersteunt beweging en ontmoeting en geeft ritme aan de dag. Zo wordt gezondheid niet alleen ondersteund binnen de woning, maar gedragen door de wijk als geheel.<\/p>\n

De uitdagingen van vergrijzing, dementie en eenzaamheid vragen niet alleen om meer woningen, maar om andere en betere woonomgevingen. Wanneer gezondheid grotendeels wordt bepaald door sociale en ruimtelijke factoren, wordt architectuur een strategisch instrument in het bevorderen van welzijn. Niet door zorg te isoleren, maar door haar te verweven met het dagelijks leven.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands is not experiencing a temporary wave of ageing, but a lasting demographic shift. In 2040, our country will have almost 5 million people aged 65 and over. The number of people with dementia is expected to double. At the same time, the proportion of single-person households is growing rapidly: by 2045, over 40 percent of all households will consist of one person. By 2030, more than 288,000 more suitable homes will be needed for older people.<\/p>

But these figures are about more than the increasing demand for care. They mark a fundamental shift in how we live together. Vulnerability is no longer an exception, but a normal part of our daily life. Older people live independently for longer, even as their capacities gradually decline. Informal care is becoming more important, but it is not infinitely available.<\/p>

A less visible but equally significant development is growing loneliness. Social isolation is increasing not only among older people, but also among the young. This is not only a question of wellbeing. International health studies show that only about 10 percent of our health is directly determined by medical care. Between 55 and 80 percent is linked to lifestyle, social relationships and the quality of the living environment. When social connection declines, physical health and pressure on the care system are affected too.<\/p>

The central question is: how do we organize living environments in which people can meet, form meaningful relationships and feel part of a community? Care is no longer a separate phase of life, but an integrated part of how we live. The care transition is therefore not merely a medical question. It is a design challenge.<\/p>

Health is shaped in everyday life.<\/h3>

For a long time, the spatial organization of care was based on a single idea: illness is treated in specialized institutions. Architecture served as infrastructure for medical intervention, focused on control and efficiency. Contemporary public health insights point in a different direction. Health does originate primarily in the clinic, but in daily life, to the degree to which people feel safe, connected and autonomous. The built environment plays an active role in this. Living, meeting and participating in the community are not preconditions for care, but its foundation. This also changes the economic logic. Investing in the living environment and community-building at the front end reduces the need for intensive care at the back end. A strong social structure relieves formal care and strengthens informal networks. Architecture and urban design thus become a strategic factor in the care transition.<\/p>

Collective self-reliance as a foundation<\/h3>

Clustered housing models offer an answer to the growing need for suitable housing for older people. They combine self-contained homes with a shared structure and communal facilities. The core of this housing model lies in what we call *samenredzaamheid*, or communal self-reliance. Where self-reliance assumes the individual on their own, communal self-reliance recognizes that people are part of social networks. Mutual involvement and informal support make it possible to live independently for longer. Communal self-reliance is not a social program separate from architecture. It appears through careful organization of proximity, visibility, and accessibility. The transition between private and collective is clear but not abrupt. Residents meet each other in the daily rhythm: while gardening, having coffee, coming home.<\/p>

In the Ubuntuplein project, it becomes visible how these principles are translated spatially. Older residents live here in a setting that encourages social interaction without losing independence. The homes are designed to be fully wheelchair accessible, with wide corridors and spacious bathrooms. Communal gardens, meeting spaces, and shared facilities invite informal contact. Residents look after the garden together, sometimes cook together, and keep an eye out for one another. The result is a safe, inclusive living environment in which people feel at home, not despite their vulnerability, but together with one another.<\/p>

Care buildings as part of the neighbourhood<\/h3>

A caring living environment cannot function as a closed enclave. When care buildings isolate themselves from their surroundings, they reinforce the sense of seclusion. Future-proof care is interwoven with the daily life of the neighbourhood.<\/p>

At Hofje Wendakker, this vision has been translated into an open courtyard structure with twelve living rooms arranged around a green inner garden. The traditional care home for people with dementia was replaced by an open, informal courtyard that is connected to the neighbourhood. Instead of long, closed corridors, a legible environment appeared in which residents can move freely and where outdoor space becomes a natural part of the daily rhythm. The garden and animal paddock are freely accessible to residents. Residents decide for themselves when to go outside, which has led to more movement and a better day and night rhythm. The result is a care environment that offers not only medical care, but also quality of life, rhythm and meaningful social interaction.<\/p>

Renewing existing care buildings<\/h3>

A large number of care complexes from the 1980s and 1990s are now outdated. They reflect a care model focused primarily on manageability: large-scale corridor structures, a closed appearance, and little connection with the outside. Yet it is precisely these buildings that offer opportunities for transformation. By reducing scale, mixing functions, and placing outdoor space at the center, a traditional care home can be transformed into a care community that meets contemporary standards of comfort, sustainability, and personal care.<\/p>

At Foreschate in Voorschoten, we chose the transition from a residential care home to a modern care community. The new building combines group homes with a neighbourhood center that is open to everyone. Public functions on the ground floor strengthen the connection with the neighbourhood, while the residential floors are organized on a small, manageable scale. The garden acts as a social heart: an accessible, green meeting place that connects residents and neighbourhood.<\/p>

Breaking through loneliness with spatial logic<\/h3>

Loneliness is one of the great silent health problems of our time. Social isolation increases the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and physical complaints. Architecture cannot solve loneliness, but it can create the conditions for encounter. This calls for a spatial structure in which daily movement leads to natural contact, without that contact being forced.<\/p>

At Hof van Zutphen, living is organized around a communal garden that structures the entire ensemble. Galleries function as places to linger, and the Hofhuis offers space for activities that bring residents and local people together. The essence lies not in the program me, but in the spatial logic that makes encounter possible. Community-building thus becomes part of daily life, not as an obligation, but as a matter of course.<\/p>

The value of outdoor space<\/h3>

A caring living environment does not end at the front door. The immediate surroundings shape how people move and take part in the life of the neighbourhood. Walking, gardening, and experiencing the seasons stimulate the senses and reduce stress. Accessible walking routes, recognizable landmarks, and the proximity of amenities support independence. For people with increasing care needs, and certainly in cases of dementia, a legible environment is essential for safety and orientation.<\/p>

In our designs, outdoor space is therefore always an integral part of the concept, not as leftover space, but as a social heart. A well-designed outdoor space is inviting, supports movement and encounter, and gives rhythm to the day. In this way, health is not only supported within the home but carried by the neighbourhood.<\/p>

When health is largely determined by social and spatial factors, architecture becomes a strategic instrument for promoting wellbeing. Not by isolating care, but by weaving it into everyday life.<\/p>

A caring society does not emerge by itself. It must be designed.<\/p>
