‘A room with a view’ offers high quality housing combined with commercial functions for a location in the historical center of Vilnius. With maximum respect for its surroundings, the project aims to be a contemporary, but contextual addition to the city. The building presents itself as an intricate volume and a roof. Two courtyards shape the transition between the public space and the privacy of the building. The patio’s give entrances to both buildings and provide green public space and terraces for the commercial plinth.
Because of its shape, the building is almost never perceived as a whole and always has a new “face”. The roof gets a special treatment. Through precise transformations on the archetypal shape, the roofscape becomes an exciting place to live and becomes the special feature to the building’s architecture. The roof is detached from its base through continuous windows, floating over the brick plinth. The apartments under the roof offer amazing views over the old city.
The building becomes another red roof in Vilnius’ Old city, blending smoothly into the historical cityscape and offering fresh and contemporary architecture on this special location.
