We recently won a competition for a new transformation of a fire station into a library in Londerzeel!
The current fire station is a landmark building on Brandweerplein in Londerzeel, its history and existence play an important role in the identity of the place. The fire station is no longer sufficient and will move to the new site. The current barracks will then be vacant and will receive a new sustainable facility with the library and other facilities. It has become apparent that the destination, a cultural and social anchor point in this location, has interesting spin-off possibilities, powerful meaning for Londerzeel.

Firstly, a happy new year from everyone here at Woonwerk!
We received the fantastic news that 3 of our projects received a considerable amount of subsidies for the ‘Call innovative projects’ (Oproep innovatieve projecten) of Wonen in Vlaanderen for Housing Corporations KANVAZ woonmaatschappij en Goed Wonen Rupelstreek. This means that we can continue our research into more sustainable and affordable housing. These subsidies will cover the extra building cost of the sustainable interventions and the use of biobased materials in the projects. We are very excited that with this support we will be able to realize our sustainable ambitions!!
We are very happy to announce that we have officially moved in and set up at our new office in the Schiehavenkade of Rotterdam!
We are enjoying the fresh start and look forward to welcoming you here soon!

Recently, Evelien van Veen was a guest in a podcast for Platform31 called ‘Geclustered Living’. The focus of the podcast was to discuss future-proof living for the elderly and how clustered forms of housing can be built more efficiently. Of the 900,000 new-build homes, the cabinet reserves about 300,000 for the elderly. How do our elderly want to live and what are their needs?
Evelien had this discussion along with podcast host Dore van Duivenbode, Michel Pott (project manager Talis housing association) and Sander Oosterhuis (advisor housing and care for municipality of Zwolle). Authors Annette Duivenvoorden and Susan van Klaveren of Platform31. Location Aaron residential care complex, Lent.

Our project Site Serneels was featured in an article ‘Grootste financiële project in onze geschiedenis’ (The largest financial project in our history) from the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws!
Site Serneels has now started construction with the ceremonial placing of the first column in Herenthout.
At the request of the Municipality of Herenthout to construct a new building for the technical department and the fire station and red cross on an old industrial site, Woonwerk made a proposal to create a small industry terrain by cleverly dealing with the layout of the site. The fire station and red cross is placed against the technical department and follows the line so that it also connects to the building line with an equivalent concrete façade. Together with the public space, both buildings form a beautiful whole.
Recently Evelien van Veen gave a lecture at a conference in Venice called “We do care. Architecture and design for the elderly and for people with disabilities. A confrontation between Dutch and Italian contexts.” This conference was hosted by the Università Iuav di Venezia.
The purpose of the conference is a confrontation between the Netherlands and Italian realities on the issues of architectural design, open spaces and design for the elderly and people with disabilities, one of the most important topics in the current socio-cultural scenario of the European Union.
Evelien gave her lecture, “Forever young?’’ along with many other interesting speakers such as Chris Van Langen (Creative industries fund NL), Marjo Alers (‘s Heeren Loo), Caro van Dijk (oostwest) and Femke Feenstra (Gortemaker Algra Feenstra). From the Italian context the speakers included Silvano Pangerc (I.S.R.A.A.), Monica Botta (Studio Monica Botta), Francesca Camerin (Università Iuav di Venezia), Michela De Poli and Adriano Marangon (MADE Associati) and finally Rosaria Revellini (Università Iuav di Venezia).
These speeches will also be compiled into a publication, which we look forward to sharing.

We have recently submitted the building application for the extension of our existing project Oostvaarders Nature experience centre in Almere. Construction is expected to start after the summer!
We recently won a design and build competition in Limburg! This will lead to the realization of compact apartment buildings that consist of four different affordable apartment types that can be linked together and together form one entity.
The idea is to build for everyone, so the apartment types must be designed compactly and cost-consciously. Which apartment types are used is free to fill in as long as each type is used at least once. The strength of these housing types lies in their simplicity. The width of each unit has been carefully determined so that a combination of different types can be easily made within the system. Depending on the orientation and specific preconditions of the site, the position of the circulation zone and access can be located at the front or rear of the building. The presence of the gallery and its position ensures an expressive image for the building.
Our Wendakker Courtyard project was featured by Wienerberger Nederland for its use of facade bricks that contribute to a healthy living environment!

We recently participated in a masterplan competition in Bree, Belgium. The project consisted of 63, three bedroom homes in a diverse masterplan.
The new residential environment must contribute to the development of a qualitative and active public space. The active use of that public space as an extension of it the living environment of the residents and encouraging walking and bicycles are included in the plan. The project must fit in nicely with the qualities in the area. The openness, light and air at the location are unique. Those qualities still offer added value to the living environment. In our plan we want to safeguard those qualities for the future residents and neighbours.
The proposal offers a residential environment with owner-occupied homes for one target group with a limited income with ample attention has been devoted to the development of qualitative and sustainable homes in a green living environment. In the extension of the district on the east side is a playground and small recreation area fits in nicely with the green ambition within the plan.

Construction has now started for our KOP housing project in Deventer!
KOP is an expressive residential building situated in the creative harbor district of Deventer. The area has a rough industrial atmosphere, and is home to artists, entrepreneurs and eccentric self-build projects. The KOP (HEAD) building, signals the start of the harbor district when arriving from the center of Deventer. The building is thus designed to reflect the district: lively, tough and eccentric.
We recently won a housing competition in Rumst!
SHM Goed Wonen Rupelstreek wants to realize a contemporary housing project by replacing the existing apartments with new contemporary comfortable homes. In our proposal, 57 residential units will be realized divided into 2 residential fields and different housing types will be provided. 9 ground-level single-family homes with 3 bedrooms and a garden will be realized. These homes are located on the eastern side of the area, against the backyards of the neighbors. In this way, these 2-layer volumes beautifully shape the transition to the environment. The other 48 homes are apartments with 1 or 2 bedrooms.

The Ministerie van Maak exhibition ‘It’s About Time’ has finally come to an end, but now comes the time to reflect on our findings. Architectenweb has published an article containing the first conclusions of the initiators of Ministerie van Maak ZUS, MANN and IABR. JDWA proudly took part in the exhibition , we chose the site of Ijsselsprong in Deventer to propose our 10,000 homes which we know well from our many projects in the area.

Woonwwerk is expanding and looking for a new office to call home! We are searching for a space of around 200m2 in Rotterdam, let us know if you have any suggestions!
Woonwerk had a blast at the 10th IABR last week. Did you already visit our model for 10,000 homes in Deventer? It was super interesting to see how the 100 practices approached the brief in such contrasting ways.
About 6 weeks ago, the 101 Test Kit models of specific locations in the Netherlands were delivered to the selected design teams including Woonwerk Architecten. With deep knowledge of the various locations, landscapes, substrates and communities, teams of designers set to work to fit 10,000 homes each into the Test Kit. We chose the site of Deventer which we know well from our many projects in the area.
The whole of spatial solutions is brought together to form the largest Dutch model ever. The collective of spatial solutions will then be on display during the 10th edition of the architecture exhibition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.

Our project Roodhuisberg in Aarschot now almost complete on the construction site. The project consists of 12 social houses in two challenging plots, we had to pay special attention to typology and orientation when designing within these constraints. Now we can take a look back and compare the project from visualisation to realisation, which is really exciting to see.
In a recent competition in the village of Burst, 2DVW designed two new small residential buildings and the transformation of an existing care home around a shared monastary garden. By orienting the building perpendicular to the existing street, the garden becomes an extension of the public space in the heart of the village providing a peacefull green space for its inhabitants.
The future development of Huveneerstraat will be a very dense project, asking for a creative urban solution. 2DVW will soon start designing the urban plan for this site situated on the crossroads between urban and rural Flanders.
Happy to announce that our project in Glabbeek was selected the winner of a recent competition. On the narrow plot we managed to combine high quality social housing with a strip of collective green gardens giving all future residents acces to the garden and an opportunity to meet each other!

Upfield office ‘The Attic’
In 2017 Unilever demerged the margarine- and spreads department which continued as an independent company named Upfield. The Nassaukade site had to be reorganized, JDWA transformed a large unused attic and empty floors of the adjacent villa into office spaces. This transformation creates an office space with characteristic qualities by merging the old and the new. To create a dynamic workspace JDWA challenged the standard office layout. The meeting rooms are designed as furniture pieces that create zones and the roof is partially replaced with glass offering light and a view over the river Maas.
As a team we are selected for a competition in Belgium. For this competition we are going to develop a master vision and an urban design study for the district “Kolderbos” in Genk.We are looking forward to this collaboration with: 2DVW Architects (JDWA + RDVA), PosadMaxwan, VE-R and Simply Community.

2DVW (JDWA+RDVA) wins competition in Belgium with a design for the Dwarsstraat. A design involving a qualitative and sustainable way of living.
The redevelopment of the existing buildings will offer a contemporary office with all comfort and quality. The design translates the concept of new working environment tailored to the demand of the company. Instead of placing corridors and rooms, a mix of work units and landscape office spaces will enhance the interaction and flexibility for the users.
The assignment consisted the realization of 28 senior bungalows in Ten Kouter. Adding family homes creates a mix of homes for young and older people. The realized houses and the square create a future-proof living environment.

Last Thursday the first workshop about the new Waelpolder residential environment took place. During an interactive evening in ‘s-Gravenzande, local residents and interested parties discussed about this topic, led by Johan de Wachter.
The intervention of the façade is mainly focused on the roof to bring more daylight to the interior space and provide a pleasant view towards the river Maas. In this way, the building will continue its life with a new character on top of the historical layers.
The realization of a new housing project in the center of Serskamp has come into full swing. After demolishing a few old buildings there is room for new homes for starters, seniors and families in the center of the community.
The factory building, located along the river Maas in Feyernoord, is transformed into a office space for Upfield. The building which was originally built around 1891 will be given a new life as a creative and dynamic work space. The project includes the attic and first floor of the main building as well as the three floors of the “Villa”. Both are situated above the production and logistics departments of the factory and also below the office building well-known as “De Brug”.
Hofje Wendakker for Viattence is a project of 12 terraced houses for 96 elderly people with dementia in Heerde. Sleeping upstairs, living downstairs in a common court. Research shows that this way of living results in healthier residents. Viatence sees this reflected in a reduction in drug use. Hofje Wendakker was developed and built by Vitaal ZorgVast, Apollo Zorgvastgoed and BAM Wonen. Opened last week by Minister Hugo de Jonge. Photos were taken by Luuk Kramer. The vacated old buildings make way for other care homes which are being developed by VanWonen Vastgoedontwikkeling.
We are very proud of the result, look for more information and pictures on the project page.
School 7 in Den Helder has won the Public Library of the Year Award 2018. An international prize that rewards new and innovative libraries. School 7 was voted best out of 4 other libraries in the world. Last year the library was named the best in the Netherlands. In 2012, Van Veen Architecten and Marcel van der Veer (MARS interior architects) jointly won the European tender for the design of the library in Den Helder with an integrated plan. An important part was the reuse of the seventh municipal school from 1905, hence the name School 7.
” The jury is impressed with the way the Helderse library works with local partners and focuses on social sustainability. School 7 offers services to increase opportunities for all, this is reflected in the architecture and layout of the library. In addition, the fantastic location, the architecture of the building and the way in which the old school and the new library form a harmonious whole are praised . ”
Design School 7
Van Veen and Van der Veer have left intact the old structure of classrooms, corridors and toilets. The existing detailing has been preserved as much as possible and integrated into the new building. The outer facade of the old building has also been preserved in the new building and is visible through a large void. The corner of the old building has been broken open and a steel gold-coloured construction frames the perforation of the old facade. A monumental stairwell annex grandstand forms the heart of the building. The existing roof construction and roof boarding are visible and partly reinforced by a new construction. School 7 in Den Helder is the new home base of KopGroep Libraries, the Helderse Historical Association and the Helderse Volksuniversiteit. More information about the design can be found here.
Library in the 21st century
Never before has a Dutch library been nominated for this prize. According to the jury, School 7 is a good example of what a 21st century library should look like. The jury is impressed by the way in which the Helderse library collaborates with local partners and focuses on social sustainability. School 7 offers services to increase opportunities for all, this is reflected in the architecture and layout of the library. Also praised is the fantastic location, the architecture of the building and the way in which the old school and the new library form a harmonious whole.
